Gary D. Ellis
Gary is a native of St. Catharines, Ontario; where he completed his undergraduate studies in Political Science at Brock University. He went on to York University in Toronto to pursue a Master's degree in Communication & Culture. It was during his graduate studies that he first began to explore the field of law under the supervision of Dr. Rosemary J. Coombe, one of Canada’s Top Legal Scholars; and that exploration eventually developed into a passion and a successful legal career.
In 2007, Gary earned his law degree from the University of Calgary. After articling for an insurance litigation firm in his native Ontario, he returned to Calgary in 2008; and began working for a highly respected boutique firm with a focus on personal injury law.
Gary soon found, however, the most rewarding part of his legal work was helping people resolve disputes in a one-on-one capacity. In 2010, an opportunity exclusively in Family Law was presented.
Gary still focuses his practice exclusively in Family Law. He is a proponent of alternative dispute resolution (“A.D.R.”) procedures, such as mediation and arbitration, or Judicial Dispute Resolution (“J.D.R.”), whenever possible; but he also has extensive courtroom litigation experience, and has appeared before the Provincial Court, the Court of the Queen’s Bench and the Court of Appeal. Throughout his career, Gary has continued to build his expertise and skills in handling a wide variety of matters on behalf of his clients. No matter the file complexity, a fair and just result, and one obtained in a cost-efficient way, is always Gary’s objective on behalf of his clients.
Gary is affiliated with several local and national professional organizations, including the Law Society of Alberta, the Law Society of Upper Canada (Past), the Canadian Bar Association, and the Calgary Bar Association. He has also been actively involved in his community as a Big Brother with Big Brothers & Big Sisters of St. Catharines-Thorold in his native St. Catharines.
When not practising Family Law, Gary enjoys traveling; some of his favorite destinations have included Italy, London, New York City, Singapore, and Sri Lanka and Wyoming. He is also a fitness enthusiast and enjoys gym training and hot yoga.
